The director of Born on the Fourth of July is Oliver Stone. Oliver Stone was born on Sept. 15, 1946 in New York City.He attended Yale University from 1964 but dropped out in 1965. After dropping out he taught at a Catholic high school in Saigon, Vietnam called Free Pacific Institute. In 1966 he signed up for the U.S. Merchant Marine. While traveling he started writing his first novel, "A Child's Night Dream." In 1967, he enlisted into the army where he was wounded twice. He received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After his return from Vietnam, Stone studied film-making at New York University. Martin Scorsese was Stone's first teacher and mentor. He graduated in 1971 and shortly after began his career in the film industry. He has had 48 Academy Awards and 40 nominations.
